Notes
Twisted Elegance was my second commission from the Chris D.C. Ramos Dance Company and was premiered by the company at the JoyceSoho. Like many of Ramos's works, this one is an exploration of human relationships. The idea of "twisted elegance" is the twisted complexity of otherwise "elegant" social interactions in which we all relate to each other on at least two levels: the social as well as the deeper human/instinctual. The music, which contrasts flowing and lyrical sections with rapid, twisting conversations between cello and piano, is reflected in the beautiful and athletic movements of the dancers, whose bodies intertwine in serpentine gestures, yet somehow maintain a bold elegance.
