For Robin was written in a passionate outburst of anger, frustration, loss, grief, and helplessness at the sudden and untimely loss of my dear friend Robin Lim. The music expresses the raw emotion of these feelings, through angry fortissimo clusters in the piano and chords and dissonant double-stops in the cello. Moments of a calmer version of the scaler motif that opens the work appear occasionally, and eventually this searching, yearning version, takes over until the end. A kind of peace seems to be sought but never quite realized.
